Preheat the oven to 400°F.
3 Tbsp. butter or margarine
1 clove garlic
3 slices bread, white, dark, or combination
Place the butter in a small saucepan. Peel and crush the clove of garlic slightly. Add the garlic to the butter and place the pan over low heat. When the butter has melted, remove the pan from the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes while the butter absorbs the garlic flavor. Remove the garlic and brush both sides of each slice of bread with butter. Stack the bread and cut it into ½-to ¾-inch cubes. Place the cubes on a cookie sheet in a single layer and bake at 400°, stirring once or twice, until brown and crisp (8 to 10 minutes). If you don’t place to use the croutons right away, store them in an airtight container.
