Preheat oven to 350ºF
⅓ -½ cup sugar (depending on variety of apple)
1 cup water
¼ tsp. ground cinnamon
few drops red food coloring (optional)
Peel and core the apples. Place them in a shallow baking dish. Mix all the ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat and boil for 1 minute. Pour the hot syrup over the apples. Bake, uncovered, at 350ºF, basting often, for about 45 minutes or until the apples are fork-tender.
Serve warm or cold, placing each apple and some of the remaining syrup in individual serving dishes and topping with ice cream, whipped cream, or light cream.
